This article is on - Why Mumbai Flooded every Year.
Mumbai’s GDP in Financial Year 2019-20 was ₹ 28.78 lakhs crores ($ 400 Billions), with the GDP growth of 6% (2018-19).
The capital of Maharashtra is divided in two parts - Mumbai Subarban District and Mumbai City District. It has many areas like - Malad, Powai, Jogeshwari, Borivali, etc.
BMC spends more than 500 crores in every rainy season. Millions of Mumbaikers are affected during rains every year.
Closer look on Drainage Network :
Mumbai’s drainage system is a network of 2000 km of open drains and 400 km of closed drains with 186 out falls into arabian sea and more than 30000 water entrances.
Waste water from streets and homes goes into drains and is taken through pipe to sea.
This seems like a good setup, and it is actually good. But why one of the best drainage systems “Fails”.
Drainage system’s capability :
The average rainfall in Mumbai is 17 mm/day measured by rain gauge, but Mumbai’s drainage system can handle rainfall upto 25 mm/day at low tide.
Decade’s worst flooding :
In July 2005 most flooding hit the city. It rained 944 mm in just 24 hours. The damage cost more than 500 Crores and more than a thousand deaths.
DID YOU KNOW :
Mumbai was made by Landfills to connect seven islands and the surrounding coastal areas.
Why the Drainage system “FAILS” :
Mumbai has the highest population density and due to it the factors (over-development, destruction of swamps and coastal areas) has Mumbai prone to Mumbai flooding every year.
These factors are like lack of natural systems and overdevelopment also give another problem - “Silting”. The city’s underground and natural drainage system like - Mahim, creek so much have silt deposited in them and it blocks their flow and causes water to overflow and flood.
And the other one is, when Mumbai’s drainage system started building up in 1860, they didn’t plan for high tides to get so high that it covers the outfall completely. That water starts flowing back in drains.
If you think that “there are no natural resources to keep the city safe?” - “No, because the majority of trees were disappeared for making buildings, industries, residency etc”.
After the 2005 flood BMC proposed 8 pumping stations and 300 street level pumps to stop sea water to back in drainages. But out of 8 only 5 have been completed so far, this amount is not enough to keep the city safe. BMC spends 10 Crores per year on street level pumps.
From a Study :
According to a study, the rising sea could sink Mumbai by 2050.
